Swing by Ashton Automotive & Performance if your automobile is exhibiting any of the problems listed below. These problems are signs that the water pump is malfunctioning and needs to be replaced. Your engine relies on the water pump to circulate the coolant through it to keep the temperature below 220 degrees Fahrenheit. A damaged or faulty water pump will be unable to do its job and your engine will overheat every time you drive your car, truck, or utility vehicle.
Damage to the Pump
One of the first indications that you need to replace the water pump is damage to the pump. Specifically, the water pump can develop a small leak that will cause the coolant to pool around it. As the coolant rests against the pump, it will start to eat away at the metal. Consequently, you will end up with a corroded water pump that has rust all over it.
Leaking Engine Coolant
Eventually, the coolant leak will get worse and you will see coolant spots or puddles on the garage floor. When this happens, the level of coolant in the engine is reduced significantly, and the engine may start to overheat. As an aside, a water pump isn’t the only cooling system part that can leak coolant. Your car may also develop a coolant leak out of the radiator hoses, the radiator, or the thermostat.
Reduced Coolant Circulation
Your water pump may not develop a leak but it may start to have problems circulating the coolant through the engine. As we mentioned above, this causes the engine to overheat because there is not enough coolant in it to absorb the heat it is generating.
Growling Engine Noises
Another sign that you need to replace the water pump is growling noises coming from the front of the engine. This is where the water pump is located and it will start to growl or grind as its internal mechanisms wear out. You need to replace the water pump if it’s making noise.
Constant Overheating
Finally, as we have mentioned throughout this post, your engine will start to overheat constantly if there is a problem with the water pump because it is being starved of coolant. If you continue to operate your vehicle when the engine is too hot, you could damage it severely.
