I Smell Exhaust Blowing Through My Vents

Ashton Automotive & Performance advises that if you have exhaust flowing through the vents, the exhaust manifold is leaking in the exhaust system. This can also be a sign that the gasket that seals the manifold is leaking. Either way, you will have to have the exhaust part replaced in order to prevent exhaust from making its way into the cabin of your automobile.

Rotten Performance

In addition to exhaust odors, your engine’s performance will be rotten if the manifold or gasket is leaking. The reason why is that the exhaust that was just drawn out of the combustion chamber returns to the combustion chamber. Consequently, this prevents the engine from being able to produce combustion efficiently. As such, your engine performance will lag.

Rotten Gas Mileage

You would think that this would improve your gas mileage, but it actually makes it worse. When the engine does not run efficiently, it consumes more fuel. Unfortunately, this means that you will be making extra trips to the service station to keep gas in the tank. These extra trips can be costly. It’s a good idea to have the manifold replaced as soon as possible.

Popping or Hissing

You might also receive an audible warning that the gasket or manifold is leaking. The manifold tends to pop when the exhaust flows through the crack. The gasket will also pop, but it might hiss, as well. Generally, these noises are the loudest when you start your car, truck, or utility vehicle, so listen then. If you hear these noises, head to our shop.

Strong Burning Odors

Strong and rancid burning odors coming from the engine are another sign that it is filling with exhaust that is leaking out of the manifold or gasket. In addition to the odors, you will watch the temperature gauge needle rise on the dashboard as the engine starts to overheat. The exhaust that is leaking through the crack is very hot and it affects the engine’s temperature.

Check Engine Warning

Finally, the main computer chip in your automobile may give you a notification on the dashboard that you’ve got a problem. In this case, the problem is an exhaust leak and the notification will be the check engine light. The light will continue to shine until you resolve the problem by replacing the exhaust manifold or manifold gasket.

We can do that here at Ashton Automotive & Performance in Killeen, TX, so call us today.
